Gutenberg couldn’t have invented the mechanical printing press in 1493 and printed the Bible in 1455.
These dates are widely and easily available.

But where did you find that Gutenberg carved letters into individual wooden blocks? Nothing like this ever happened. He engraved the letters into steel punches which were then used to make single matrices. These were used to cast letters which were then assembled. The invention of the hand-casting device was more important than the printing press, which was a converted wooden press as used for pressing grapes.
God knows what you read in order to come up with this…

This is a small thing, but I’d like to see the pages turn/change when I tap on them instead of always having to use a Back button… What’s the point of having a spiral notebook look if it isn’t going to act like a notebook.
I would like to be able set bookmarks and see the application remebering state. Every time I exist ie due to a call, i lose where I was in the text. Would be great to open up how I left things.

I was surprised by a glaring error on the first page I looked at, so felt I should report it. Then I saw the venerable and ever vigilant Erik Spiekermann spotted the same mistake way back in July.
I bought the app in November and it still hasn’t been corrected. Come on, it’s not too difficult to post an upgrade in the App Store.
How does one get back to the app after it has taken us to a third party website? At the moment I have to close Safari and start all over again.
Hey just got your typography application for my iphone and it keeps quiting. Seems really buggy on the iphone OS4. Is their going to be an update soon that fixes this problem? Let me know because I don’t want to give you a bad review on the itunes store. Thanks
Having the same problem as Patrick and Mo on the iphone OS4. Can’t have it open for more than a few seconds without it shutting down! Very disappointing.
Same again. Crashes when accessing content pages on iPhone 3GS/iOS4, though it did work on same 3GS with previous iPhone OS. . Some response or blog post from the author would be appreciated?

It works fine with the contents “Visual Type Anatomy Glossary” but the app turns off when I use the others.

This has been a useful app until very recently, as several others have stated above – when you try to access the content. Re-installing doesn’t help, will there be any feedback regarding this as I have recommended it to students as an aid in their study of type?

Hi there, I had purchased this item sometime ago for my iphone, now when I open the program and select, ‘brief history of type’ or any of the other sub menu’s the app closes!
It has done this for a while now and is extremely frustrating because as a designer it is one of my best apps.
Could you please explain what is going on for me and how am I able to fix this?

Type history, and invention of the printing press — should be c. 1439
and not 1493 (after his death).
There’s a typo in the Gill Sans explanation, if I’m not mistaken. It says “Gills Sans”.

Typesetting->Capitals…”appreviations” should be “abbreviations”

Tapping the status bar should scroll the screen to top. Especially helpful for long lists.
I clicked on your link to buy your manual but it just takes me to the apple store.

On the type on the web/web basics page, after figure 4.1, the next figure is ??.
Will you make a calculator for converting points, picas and ems. Or cheatsheets for dingbats and symbols?
Like the app so far, but whenever I go to the specimens and press the top right button to change type size, when I press done, the app crashes…
Is this something you know about?

This application does not work on iPad at all. It crashes when I try to access a content page.
App crashes on iOS 4 GM when I try to open nearly any content section.
I’ve got exactly the same problem as Jay above. Every content page makes the app crash on iPad.
Comments above seconded. App also crashing on me when I enter any content page.

“Paper sizes” crashes on the iPhone 4 upon every attempt.
Same here! Crashes consistently – iphone 3g iOS4 but also before upgrade.

Hi, I have recently upgraded my iPhone 3GS 16gb to OS 4.0 and this app now quits when I look at the resource section.
Fix the app so it works with os4!
