I am currently finalizing the iOS4 bug-fix update, and will be submitting it to Apple in the morning. This will serve as Version 1.5, as it combines elements of Versions 1 and the almost-completed Version 2. It will return to the App Store as soon as it has been approved.
Some of the updates included in Version 1.5 include:
- Corrected and updated text with new content, especially for Type on the Web
- HD graphics for iPhone 4 Retina Display
- Bouncing menus (yay!)
- General interface updates, new icon, and all-around prettier to look at
- Type Anatomy graphics can scroll side-to-side between terms
- Type Anatomy images have been updated, and some new terms added
- Font Size Ruler can now scroll the full text at any size
- Font Size Ruler includes more typefaces
- Faster page loading, and generally more-responsive UI
- Minor bug fixes
- Graphic updates to this site to reflect the new UI will arrive when the app has been approved
Thank you all for your patience in this matter, I greatly appreciate it, and look forward to spending more time on making Version 2 the best app I can. In the meantime (I’m sorry, shameless self-plug…), play a few rounds of The Font Game.

Hey all,
I am aware of the iOS4 bug. The Typography Manual was created for 2.x iPhones. I am working on fixing it for iOS4, and will submit it as soon as I can.
I am also working on Version 2, which has taken awhile, given that this is a personal project (and I’m still subject to client work). I am working very hard on completing it.

I decided to post a few in progress screen grabs of an upcoming update to The Typography Manual. I’m still awaiting approval from Apple on some small-ish fixes. I am also completing work on The Font Game iPhone app for I Love Typography, which should be ready by the end of the month, so please bear with me as I work to bring more typography goodness to your iPhones.

I am currently working through several large updates to The Typography Manual, that should be available by the end of the month. These include:
Searchable index of the entire app
Ability to swipe side-to-side in the Type Anatomy view, to see the previous and next items
Searchable HTML Character codes
Updated interface
Improved hyphenation
Optimized code, and faster page loading for the Manual
More support for copy-paste
Support for landscape mode in some areas
Some additional content
Please let me know if there’s anything else you’d like to see as I continue to improve the application.

There are a few erroneous passages in “A Brief History of Type” in regards to Johannes Gutenberg. The year should be 1439, not 1493, which is merely a typo. The paragraph also explains the printing press system in incorrect detail. Gutenberg’s major contribution was the casting machine, which enabled him to make standardized letter molds. These blocks were cast in a lead alloy, not wood, as reported in the article.
I am at fault for this error, which has been resolved with other fixes and clarifications in a new build of The Typography Manual, currently being reviewed by Apple. I greatly apologize for the incorrect facts mentioned above, and any details that might seem unclear to users. I appreciate the constructive feedback I’ve received, and I will continue to work hard to improve and expand all areas of the manual in upcoming releases.

As of today, The Typography Manual has officially been in the App Store for one week. I am in awe at the responses we’ve received, and hope to build in all the suggestions and feedback to make the app even more useful.
On Wednesday, July 15th, we were the #5 paid Reference app in the US iTunes Store, and are still in the top 20. We’ve been featured on Gizmodo, Design Observer, Kottke, Coudal Partners, Cult of Mac, and many design and personal blogs. We’ve been mentioned constantly on Twitter, and I hope word continues to spread!
I am working on a blog post about creating the app, which will be posted in the next day or so, along with some mockups for Version 2. The next two weeks will be slightly busy as Andrew and I both pack up to move, but the first week of August will have more details of what’s in store for the future.
Thanks to everyone that has downloaded The Typography Manual!
